Did you get inspiration from any other author or artists?
Miss Lou and Bob Marley were my inspiration as they introduced Jamaica to the world through words.
How did you first get published?
My friend introduced me to her publisher in China. She edited and published my first book.
What’s the latest really good book you read?
Black Boy Magic by Tex Stanly. It encourages young black boys to embrace their potential, pursue their dreams and overcome obstacles with confidence and determination.
Do you have any advice for aspiring authors?
There is no one way to write a book. The trick is to keep writing until you find a way that works for you. I write my first drafts during my breaks when I’m at school, on my way to work, before I go to sleep at nights, when I wake up in the middle of the night and have an idea; and even stop to write when I’m walking on the street and get an idea.
Where do you work?
I work everywhere, but my favourite place is in bed.
What’s the process of making a book?
I write the book, then I send it to the illustrator. The illustrator sends me illustrations and I decide on the ones that I like. My illustrator is also my publisher, so we discuss what illustrations are best for each poem or chapter. Some illustrations are big double spreads, some half or whole page images and little images.
My publisher also edits and makes recommendations on how I can make my poems and stories better.
Which is your favourite book and why?
My favourite book is, ‘Magic Finger’ by Roald Dahl because quite often I wish that I could raise one finger and change things when they’re not going the way that I want them to.
Where’s your favourite places in China, Jamaica and England?
My favourite places in China are Shenzhen and Beijing; London in England and Spanish Town in Jamaica.
